Based in Brooklyn, New York, street photography has become a creative outlet that now allows me to stretch myself as an artist. For much of my life, in South Africa and Zimbabwe, I was very dependent on a car to get everywhere. Walking in New York has now become a regular part of my everyday routine that is less about getting to a destination and more about getting to know parts of the city intimately. This has opened my eyes. It has enabled me to get to know, and understand the people, and see the everyday ordinary beauty of the streets on a much deeper level. Having studied journalism in South African and worked in the media industry for ten years in Cape Town and Johannesburg, I have a strong cinematic and documentary photographic approach while incorporating a narrative into my imagery. I’m always trying to capture the essential moment through unique framing and lighting. I am attracted by rich colours, textures and structures and how people blend into their urban setting. Using elements of leading lines to create depth is a strong characteristic evident in my work, and offsetting this with some type of human aspect remains essential in my artistic approach
